Your household information should remain yours.
Food Checker Labs, LLC (“FoodChecker,” “we” or “us”) operates the FoodChecker website and iPhone app. This policy describes the information we process and the choices available to you. Effective October 5, 2026.
Who we are
Food Checker Labs, LLC is responsible for the information described in this policy. Contact us at hello@getfoodchecker.com with any privacy question or request.
Using FoodChecker without an account
You can browse recalls and check packages without an account. If you save a package to My Kitchen without signing in, it is stored only on your device, in this browser or the FoodChecker app’s storage. We do not receive it. If you later sign in on that device, those packages move to your account and are removed from device-only storage. You can remove a device-only package at any time; clearing the app or browser storage also removes it.
iPhone app permissions
The FoodChecker app asks for camera access only when you choose to scan. Barcode reading and Apple’s Live Text recognition of printed lot codes and dates run on your device; that video is not uploaded. If you start a check from Visual Intelligence or a Shortcut, recognition happens on your device and opens an unsubmitted check for you to review. The app does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites and does not use the advertising identifier.
Receipt scans and unpack drafts
Receipt photos are processed on your device by an English OCR engine and are not uploaded or retained by FoodChecker. The engine downloads its software and language files on first use; their hosts may receive ordinary network metadata, not your receipt image. Review names, quantities and USD line totals before saving. Unpack drafts contain editable item fields in this tab’s session storage with a 24-hour expiry; expired drafts are ignored on the next read. Signed-in drafts are scoped to your account. Guest drafts require explicit review before transfer. Confirmed purchase fields, planning reminders and still-have confirmations are stored with your kitchen items. Receipt-derived items are not automatically identified or checked for recalls. Test-email requests retain an account/day reservation to limit repeat sends.
Grocery voice and device drafts
Optional English dictation uses your browser’s or device’s speech service, which may transmit audio to its provider. FoodChecker does not upload or store that audio. Words remain in the current page unless you confirm an account save or choose to keep a device draft. Device drafts contain the reviewed item names, quantities and categories—not audio—and are stored on your device with a 24-hour expiry. Expired drafts are removed the next time the app reads them. Anyone using this device may see an unexpired draft; use Discard device draft to remove it immediately. Signing in never imports a draft automatically. Store preferences are saved to your account only when you select Remember these stores; they do not enroll you in recall alerts.
Accounts and authentication
If you sign in, Supabase Auth processes your email address, account identifier and authentication metadata. Apple or Google also processes information when you choose Sign in with Apple or Google sign-in. With Sign in with Apple you may share your name and either your email address or an Apple private relay address. Signing in does not automatically enroll you in recall alerts.
Recall alerts
When you activate recall alerts, FoodChecker stores your email address, consent version and time, account link when applicable, selected products, general locations and grocery-store preferences, saved package identifiers, confirmation status, alert preferences and related delivery and activity records. FoodChecker does not request a specific store location for My Stores.
Optional profile location
You may provide a general city, state and ZIP code to improve regional relevance and help FoodChecker measure aggregate state coverage. FoodChecker does not request a street address or device GPS for this feature. A location already supplied for recall alerts may be reused for your profile. You can edit or remove profile location through My FoodChecker.
Product checks and barcode catalogs
Product-check inputs are used to compare your package with reviewed recall records. Recent-check summaries may be stored on your device. A standard UPC or GTIN may be sent from FoodChecker's server to product-catalog providers, including Open Food Facts and Barcode Lookup, to identify the product; FoodChecker does not send those providers your FoodChecker account identifier. For product-quality review, FoodChecker keeps the valid standard UPC or GTIN, catalog identity returned, lookup outcome and limited follow-up actions in an access-controlled operational log that expires after 30 days. These lookup logs do not include your account, household, lot code, package photo, PLU or store-specific code. Barcode camera video and supported barcode reading remain on your device.
Optional photos and third-party AI
Label, printed-date, receipt and basket photo analysis is optional. Before an image is sent, FoodChecker asks for your permission and offers a barcode or manual alternative. The selected still image is sent through FoodChecker to OpenAI solely to perform the requested analysis. FoodChecker sets supported requests not to store the response, does not add the image to your account and does not intentionally retain the uploaded image after the request finishes. OpenAI may temporarily retain API content for safety and abuse monitoring under its data-control terms. FoodChecker stores only the candidate text you review and choose to save. A photo-based identity or reading is a suggestion, not a recall or safety result.
Feedback and support
When you send feedback, a correction or a support request, FoodChecker stores the information you provide, such as your name, email address and message, along with limited referral and device-category information. This information is private, excluded from approved analytics events and used to respond to you and improve FoodChecker.
Early-access requests
If you ask to try Grocery List or My Kitchen early, FoodChecker stores your email, the feature you chose, consent version and time, and request status so we can consider and contact you about that feature. Asking for access does not enroll you in recall alerts. You can request removal through Corrections & contact. Product update emails are sent only if you opt in, and every message includes an unsubscribe link.
Analytics and technical data
FoodChecker uses a random app or browser identifier and limited event and performance data to understand feature use and reliability. This data is not linked to your name or email. Approved analytics properties exclude product codes, lot numbers, ZIP codes and email addresses. FoodChecker may use Vercel Analytics and PostHog for these limited measurements. Hosting and security providers may also process ordinary request, device, IP-address and network information. FoodChecker does not sell personal information and does not use it for cross-company advertising or tracking.
Service providers
FoodChecker uses Vercel for hosting and web analytics, Supabase for authentication and database services, Resend for email delivery, OpenAI for optional image analysis, PostHog for limited product analytics when enabled, Apple and Google when you select their sign-in services, and product catalogs such as Open Food Facts and Barcode Lookup for product identification. FoodChecker requires providers handling personal data to use it only to deliver their contracted service and to protect it appropriately.
Retention
Account information, saved kitchen and grocery information, account-linked recall follows and notification preferences remain until you remove them or delete your account. Device-only kitchen packages remain on your device until you remove them, sign in to move them, or clear the app or browser storage. Device drafts expire after 24 hours. Exact standard UPC or GTIN quality logs and related actions expire after 30 days. Images sent for optional analysis are not intentionally retained by FoodChecker after the request finishes; provider-side temporary retention is governed by the provider's data controls. Email delivery records are kept while needed to operate and troubleshoot requested messages and are removed with the linked account. Guest feedback, correction reports and email-only requests remain until reviewed or until you make a verified deletion request. De-identified aggregate counts that are not linked to an account may remain for product and reliability analysis.
Control and account deletion
You can pause alerts, unsubscribe and remove saved products or preferences at any time. Signed-in users can permanently delete their FoodChecker account in the app or on the website from My FoodChecker settings, without contacting support. Deletion removes the authentication account and account-linked saved products, lists, recall subscriptions, notification preferences, locations and delivery records. FoodChecker also removes email-only feedback, guide, location and support records that match the account email. If you own a shared household, ownership transfers to an eligible active member; information created by other household members remains with them. Sign in with Apple authorization is revoked before deletion. Some processor backups or records required by law, security or fraud prevention may remain for the limited period required by the processor or applicable law.
Children and geographic scope
FoodChecker is intended for general household use and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe a child has provided information, contact us and we will delete it. FoodChecker is designed for users in the United States; residents of some states and other jurisdictions may have additional privacy rights, which you can exercise by contacting us.
Changes to this policy
We will update the effective date when this policy changes and, for material changes, give notice in the app, on the website or by email when you have an account.
